Frequently Asked Questions
Is
TRICHOLOGY a new science? I’ve only recently heard
of it.
There are many professionals including Medical Doctors,
Dermatologists and even Cosmetologists, who are
not familiar with this science, however Trichology
is not new. Trichology was introduced in London,
England in 1902.
What
is the first step in determining whether a patient
needs to see a Trichologist?
The first step is consultation (analysis, diagnosis,
heredity, prognosis, recommendation). This establishes
the basis for treatment.
Why
is consultation so important when it comes to establishing
treatment?
Consultation takes place at the forefront of all
professions. For example, when one enters a restaurant,
a waiter or waitress consults with the patron in
order to give the needed service.
Who
are some of the other professionals Trichologists
work with apart from Dermatologists?
In addition to Dermatologists, there are M.D.'s,
Internal M.D.'s, Endocrinologists, Dentists, Nutritionists,
Psychiatrists, Cosmetologists and other Trichologists.
I
thought up until now that only Dermatologists handled
problems affecting the hair and scalp?
This is true in some instances. However, 90 percent
of the patients that Trichologists see are nutritionally
deficient, while others suffer thyroid imbalance
and still others are challenged with medication.
The hair responds like a barometer for the body.
When hair is shedding, it is like a red light for
a Trichologist, indicating something internally
is out of balance.
What
part does proper diet play in maintaining healthy
hair and scalp?
Proper diet and supplements lead to a healthy person
and a healthy person will have healthy hair and
scalp. To a Trichologist, the hair and scalp are
not a separate entity, but an integral part of the
whole person. So our approach to healthy hair and
scalp is to encourage a total healthy lifestyle.
